"Pirates" |

|
Due to the practice of "pirating" players from other teams and
clenched after signing the second baseman Louis Bierbauer from
the Philadelphia Athletics, the Pittsburgh Alleghenies changed
their name to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Prior to the
official change in the ball club's name, the Alleghenies were
nicknamed the "Pirates" due to the practice of "pirating"
players from other teams. This was first acknowledged on
the team jerseys in 1912 though "Pirates" was in common usage by
the 1903 World Series. |
