The History of the Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates' History at a Glance
First Pittsburgh Professionals 1886
The Pittsburgh team was independent and not affiliated with any organized league, but had salaries and were run as a business organization.
First Alleghenies Game 1887.04.30
The Pittsburgh Alleghenies (often referred to as the Pittsburgh Innocents) play their first National League game defeating the defending league champion Chicago White Stockings at Recreation Park 6-2.
"Pirates" 1891.12
Due to the practice of "pirating" players from other teams and clenched after signing the second baseman Louis Bierbauer from the Philadelphia Athletics, the Pittsburgh Alleghenies changed their name to the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Prior to the official change in the ball club's name, the Alleghenies were nicknamed the "Pirates" due to the practice of "pirating" players from other teams.  This was first acknowledged on the team jerseys in 1912 though "Pirates" was in common usage by the 1903 World Series.
Contrary tp some rumors, the Pirates were never known as the "Buccaneers."
Babe Ruth 1935.05.25
Babe Ruth makes the last three homeruns of his career at Forbes Field.  The final hit is the first ever to clear the 10 year old right field roof.
Bob Prince 1948.04.26
Joining Rosey Rowswell on the air, Bob "The Gunner" Prince broadcasts his first Pirates game.
